The yachting industry, including the charter experts at Burgess, is warming up for the summer charter season ahead by attending the world’s leading charter show, the MYBA Charter Show.

Taking place in the Italian maritime city of Genoa at the end of April, the show, which is now in its 34 year, marks a significant milestone for MYBA as the yachting association celebrates its 40 anniversary this year. To mark the occasion the renowned, trade-only event, returns to Genoa after five years in Barcelona.

What is the MYBA Charter Show?

The MYBA Charter Show is an annual show that brings together some of the finest superyachts available to charter in the Mediterranean. One of the oldest shows on the yachting circuit, the trade-only event is well attended exclusively by yachting industry professionals who take the opportunity to connect and collaborate with the wider charter community, and to familiarise themselves with some of the leading charter yachts afloat and available for the coming season.

Held over four days from the 22 – 25 April, the MYBA Charter Show is one of the most important yachting events for superyacht charter brokers, who come from all over the world to gather vital information for the season ahead.

Where can I get tickets for MYBA Charter Show?

The MYBA Charter Show is an industry only event connecting charter brokers and other professionals from the yachting industry with the yachts available for charter. If you are interested in any of the yachts in the show then your Burgess charter broker will be able to tour the yacht on your behalf, meet the captain and crew and discuss any specific requests.

Where is the MYBA Charter Show?

The 2024 MYBA Charter Show is held in the Marina Molo Vecchio in Genoa. This hilly Italian port on Italy’s Ligurian coast has been known for its seafaring prowess since medieval times when it was one of the richest cities in the world. Its antiquity and historical wealth can still be seen in the cobblestone streets and many Palazzos built within the city gates, but despite still being one of Italy’s primary commercial ports.

Genoa has also spent the latter part of the 21 century as a touristic gateway to the colourful seaside villages of Cinque Terre and glamorous Portofino. And with the opening of new luxury hotels like Palazzo Durazzo, and a cultural and gastronomic scene that deserves recognition, the city is once again thriving and attracting visitors in its own right.

Who is attending?

Industry professionals ranging from charter brokers and other industry players from around the world attend the MYBA Charter Show to connect and view the yachts on display. Captains and crew from the yachts in the show will of course also be in attendance, showcasing their skills and talents, including the annual Superyacht Chefs’ Competition (including a table scaping competition between the interior crews on board, and the All Hands On Deck Competition.

What type of yachts will be attending the MYBA Charter Show?

The yachts on show in the Marina Molo Vecchio range from 20m (65ft) to 100m (330ft) in length and are a superb cross-section of different types, with sailing yachts and fast performance yachts in evidence as well as large motor yachts and even mega yachts. With their pools, watertoys, panoramic views and impressive dining options, the selection of superyachts represent the pinnacle of yachting elegance this summer. As always, Burgess has a wide selection of its own yachts on display, including some of the largest in the show – the 85.6m (280.9ft) AQUILA and the 73.6m (241.4ft) NAIA.

What else can I do near the MYBA Charter Show?

For those attending the show or planning a yacht charter in the area, Genoa has plenty to offer away from the show and the Marina Molo Vecchio. Aside from being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and Pesto, the city that was once called “La Superba” (the Superb) is littered with centuries-old palaces, grandiose art galleries and elegant baroque churches, all legacies of its former wealth. Visit the Piazza De Ferrari

Located in the heart of Genoa, just a short walk from the historic centre and the Old Port, Genoa’s main piazza is where locals and visitors converge around the fountain of an evening. Several historical palaces and art nouveau buildings sit side by side, including the Palazzo Ducale, which was once the Palace of the Doge of Genoa (the Doge was the Head of State of what was previously the Republic of Genoa, before Napoleon incorporated Genoa into the Ligurian Republic in 1797). Other landmarks include the Teatro Carlo Felice – the neoclassical opera house of Genoa where you can watch opera, ballet, and orchestral performances year-round.

One of Italy’s most historic palaces, the Baroque style Royal Palace Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to a vast collection of paintings, frescoes, sculptures and stuccowork, the museum site includes the historic residence and the gallery. Much of the original furniture and decoration remains from the 17 and 18 centuries when it housed the Genoese aristocracy.

Revel in the beauty of the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo

Marvel at the beautiful architecture of Genoa’s Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. Constructed in 1421, the baroque façade and stuccoed interior has been modified and added to over the years, culminating in the 18-century zebra-striped Gothic-Romanesque look that it has today. Inside, various holy relics, including a glass vessel once thought to be the Holy Grail, are preserved in the Museo del Tesoro.

View the re-frescoed façade of Palazzo San Giorgio

Located on Piazza Caricamento, the Palazzo San Giorgio was built in 1260, but it wasn’t until its resident was forced into exile that it became a jail in which the explorer Marco Polo spent some time behind bars. In the 15 century this palace turned prison also became the world’s first bank – a bank at which Christopher Columbus held an account. His house, which was faithfully reconstructed in the 18 century, lies just beyond in the streets past the cathedral.
